Type A Research Projects

Every year CANSA Research spends between 4 million and 5 million rands on our Type A funding programme. We currently fund and support twenty-four research projects at universities and other research institutions across South Africa concerning epidemiology, early diagnosis, lowering the cancer risk and optimising patient care. The purpose of this funding is to support high-quality research to advance management and improve outcomes for the most common cancers in South Africa. These projects are defined as Type A research.  We are one of the very few public funded organisations in South Africa that has sustainable funding for research and we are one of the largest sponsors of this kind of research in the country.

CANSA-funded research has yielded incredible findings, a case in point being the identification of Hepatitis B infection as a major risk factor for liver cancer. This led to the development of a vaccine, which has now been incorporated into the government’s infant immunisation programme. Many lives will be saved as a result. Read more…
