As the year draws to a close and planning starts for 2020, CANSA, reminds all to diarise CANSA’s 17th national Shavathon, taking place on Saturday, 29 February 2020 at shopping centres countrywide. The theme ‘Hope 2020’ is apt, as participants will be giving ‘Hope’ to cancer Survivors and loved ones, by showing solidarity with them in the fight against cancer as they stencil, spray or shave their hair. A jaw-droppingly beautiful bra, made almost entirely of used Rooibos tea bags, has been created by a leading lingerie brand to shine the spotlight on breast cancer which affects 1 in 27 women in South Africa. The masterpiece was unveiled today to mark the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October and will be auctioned in a few weeks at a high-profile fundraising dinner in aid of CANSA’s women’s education programmes. The novel idea, which was the brainchild of the SA Rooibos Council (SARC), CANSA and lingerie retailer, Storm in A-G Cup, has been months in the making.

Those older than 12 can enter the CANSA and Green Outdoor Gyms SA’s competition, where the challenge is to make a video showing at least 5 minutes of exercise each day, and submitting it to enter the competition. Participants stand the chance to win cash prizes to the value of R10 000 each month and get entered into a draw to win their own Green Outdoor Gym to the value of R300 000. Entry fees are only R15 with R5 donated to CANSA towards its education and health awareness campaigns.

In July 2019, CANSA launches its ‘Wedding Photo Competition’ to brides and grooms on Facebook. This online wedding photo competition is open to any bride and / or groom or as a married couple whether married for one day or 50 years. Brides, grooms or couples can enter or they can be entered by any other third party, friends, family or colleagues. Winning brides and grooms or couples can win fabulous prizes and also become CANSA Ambassadors and help spread the cancer health awareness message. Proceeds from the entry fee is donated to CANSA to be able to provide counselling, support and promoting early detection awareness of cancer.

This year, International Tekkie Tax Day will be celebrated on Friday, 31 May 2019 and CANSA invites the public to be ‘Tekkie-tized’ and ‘Mezzz-merized’ in aid of CANSA’s education programmes to lower cancer risk, and care & support programmes for those affected by cancer! Stickers (R10), tattoos (R10) and ‘hickies’ or multi-coloured silicone shoelaces (R40) are available at CANSA Care Centres countrywide. We invite the public to learn about cancer screening offered through our CANSA Care Centres when they purchase their kit, as early detection is key, in order to diagnose cancer in its initial stages, for a better treatment outcome.
