Fikile Mekgoe – Mrs SA 2012 – Doing What it Takes to Educate Others re Cancer
I’ve always been moved by other people’s pain. It must be devastating to learn you have cancer – for you and your loved ones, not to mention the impact on your finances, as you undergo treatment.
I happened to befriend a lady who had cancer. At first I didn’t know this. What touched me is that she said she wanted to be close to me, to draw strength from me, as I inspired her! Knowing her changed my life and opened me up to a new world and at that moment I knew that it was God directing my attention to this initiative.
I’ve seen that cancer brings a lot of hurt and pain – one of the kids I consider my daughter, was diagnosed with cancer. It made me angry and I made a decision to get involved with CANSA and do whatever it takes to fight this disease and educate others, because I believe we can fight cancer and that we can all make a difference.
You don’t have to be a cancer survivor (someone who has heard the words ‘you have cancer’) to be actively involved – you just have to be caring enough to help someone else beyond your family, because the world is indeed bigger than your front yard.
I’m glad I’m part of the solution in fighting cancer and I’d like to invite you to join me!
