Title of the project

Epidemiological evaluation of patients presenting with HIV related lymphomas (HRL) and understanding the relationship of Anti-Retroviral treatment policy and uptake with the incidence of HRL over two consecutive 5 year study periods at Tygerberg Hospital, Western Cape, South Africa.

Project Description

The number of patients presenting with HIV related tumors that affect the blood, bone marrow, lymph, and lymphatic system has steadily increased over the past 15 years. This  project was epidemiological, focusing on studying the changing disease patterns and the increasing patient burden of HIV related Lymphoma (HRL) tumors of the lymphoid  tissue, specifically evaluating the changes over two 5 year time periods.

Value

This project will provide a future cost-beneficial service in a resource-limited hospital; clinicians will gain from the results which will have direct impact on patient management; and this project is likely to influence clinical treatment protocols in the future.
