The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is thankful to have been part of the amazing leading tenor Johan Botha‘s South Africa tour.
After being diagnosed with cancer just over a year ago, Johan Botha, has been given a clean bill of health by his doctors and celebrated life by returning home to perform in a series of concerts. On 13 August 2016 in the Artscape, Cape Town with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and in the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch on 16 August 2016. He was delighted to be healthy and survived cancer, and to have given these special homecoming concerts in aid of CANSA’s 11 Care Homes.
Johan Botha was one of the leading tenors on the circuit and has performed in all the famous Opera Houses : The Met, La Scala, Covent Garden.
The last song he sang at the concert in Stellenbosch was ‘Heimwee‘:
My hart verlang na die stilte
van die wye wuiwende veld
ver van die stadsgeluide
en die klinkende klank van geld
Ek is moeg vir die rustelose lewe
van mense wat kom en gaan
wil terug na die vrye ruimte
waar ‘n siel in woon, wat verstaan
O, ek sien weer die son op die velde
en die ewige blou daarbo
en my hart skiet vol van heimwee
en my drome swem in my oë
Ek sien weer die ylbloue berge
daar ver oor die westerkim
en wonder nie meer waarom weemoed
so sag uit my liedere klim
Klim na die grys lug bowe
waar die son in die miste kwyn
want o, ek verlang na die velde
na die ewige sonneskyn
